Whereas “broken” is generally thought to be the terminal state of porcelain figures, nontraditional reconstruction methods can reinvigorate them with new function and surprising beauty. The fracture pattern becomes a unique doorway into a storage space. “Broken” thus becomes merely a transitory state, on an object’s way to becoming sublime.
